Should Your Skincare Change With The Season?
Winter is cold. Colorado is DRY. A saga.
Living in Colorado has some major perks, dewy skin is not one of them. I truly thought that by the time I hit 30, I wouldn’t be obsessing over my skin like I had in my teens. Annnd then I moved to Colorado. Over the last few years, I’ve tried every serum, moisturizer and skincare treatment I can think of (and afford) to keep my skin looking plump and glowy.
Whether you live in a dry climate like Colorado or a coastal town with whipping winds and chilly, moisture-filled air, the change from Fall to Winter can do a number on your skin.
What I’ve found to be true: You do not need to change your entire routine, but a few swaps for moisture rich products and gentle cleansers will keep your skin happy in the chilly months.
Cold weather can cause flare ups in common skin problems.
I’ve fallen subject to our family rosacea gene and it tends to be on its worst behavior in the winter. Red nose, red ears - we’re here to party. For redness treatment with a powerful moisture punch, I like to add Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask to my routine.
Treatments containing Lactic Acid, like Sunday Riley’s Good Genes, will help with cell turnover and keep your skin looking fresh in the dead of winter.
Opt for a hydrating cleanser in the winter months to avoid stripping your skin of essential nutrients. There are so many great options under $25. Cera Ve and La Roche Posay cleansers are always within reach.
Moisturizers: Some of the absolute best moisturizers can be found at the drugstore. Dermatologists have recommended Cera Ve and La Roche Posay, over and over again. Let me tell you, they’re about the only ones thick enough to survive a CO winter. I love how rich they feel, without clogging my pores.
Vitamin C: I’m on the bandwagon and I will splurge. Vitamin C can be super powerful when it comes to maintaining healthy skin and adding brightness. When I’m in a more humid climate, I opt for the tried and true SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic. However, sometimes it’s a bit much in dryer climates. When I’m home, I reach for Obagi C-Serum 20% or Image Skincare Vital C Serum.
Niacinamide. Enough said (?) I absolutely love the glow and plump I get from Glow Recipe’s Niacinamide Watermelon Drops. Use a few pumps morning or night for an extra hit of hydration.
One of my FAVORITE things for glowy, hydrated skin — a humidifier. When I sleep with a humidifier nearby, I notice the biggest difference in how my skin looks and feels. My eyes are less puffy and my skin feels A L I V E in the morning.
I’ve linked some of my personal skincare favorites below!
pssst… don’t forget to keep a chapstick or lip balm in every crevice of your house. My partner LOVES me for this. haha
